Chitra Vāsa emblem

Our Story

A maison born from a grandmother's wall.

◆

Born from a deep love for India's living heritage, Chitra Vāsa weaves the lost arts of the haveli with the breath of the present.

Each wall is a tribute to our roots, made slowly, by named hands, with materials that were precious before they were ours.

We do not decorate walls. We give a family a wall that will outlive them, and still smell of their first evening together.

The Name

Chitra Vāsa.

Chitra, the painted image. Vāsa, dwelling and fragrance, both at once.

In Sanskrit, a single word can mean a home and the scent within it. We took that double meaning literally. Every wall we paint must be a dwelling for the eye, and a dwelling for the breath.

Four Chapters

How a wall learned to breathe.

I

The Wall That Remembered

There is a haveli in Jaipur where the Meenakari on the inner wall still carries the breath of an evening that ended fifty years ago. Attar of jasmine, the hush of monsoon, the laughter of a wedding nobody alive remembers. The wall remembered for them. Chitra Vāsa began the day we understood that a wall is not a surface. It is a witness.

II

The Hands We Found

We went looking, slowly, across Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Bihar. We found master artisans whose grandfathers had painted temples and whose children were being told to find safer work. We did not commission them. We partnered with them. Every wall we make is signed by the hands that made it, and paid as a share, not a wage.

III

The Hidden Breath

For eighteen months we sat with perfumers in Kannauj, asking a question no one had asked, how does a wall breathe without being touched. The answer became a small brass lid, set flush behind the artwork, holding an attar the family chooses. The wall remains untouched for generations. Only the air it gives back changes.

IV

What We Are Building

Eighty families. Ten lineages. One quiet promise. That an Indian home should not have to choose between heritage and the hush of the present. That a wall, when it is made slowly enough, can outlive the people who first stood before it, and still smell of the evening they fell in love.

What We Believe

Four quiet commitments.

01

Lineage, not labour

Every artisan is named, signed and registered with each commission. Fair, direct, generational employment.

02

Materials with provenance

24-karat gold leaf, mulberry silk, Hyderabad pearls, Jaipur emeralds, sourced with traceable origin.

03

Slow by intention

Six to fourteen weeks per wall. Nothing on our walls was hurried, and nothing on them was machine-made.

04

A renewable scent

Our hidden fragrance lid lets a home stay alive without ever destroying the artwork beneath it.

A Note from the Founder

“We are not in the business of decorating walls. We are in the business of giving a family a wall that will outlive them, and still smell of their first evening together.”
